Club History
The Rotary club of Morehead City was sponsored by the Rotary Club of New Bern, N.C. This is the first Rotary Club to be chartered in Morehead City and is often referred to as the Evening Rotary Club since Morehead City is now home to four Rotary Clubs. Morehead City Rotary Club members enjoy the fellowship of one another, the program speakers, and the opportunity to serve in keeping with Rotary's motto "Service Above Self." Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international Service Projects characterize Rotary worldwide.
The Rotary Club of Morehead City is one of the many clubs within the Rotary International organization. Rotary International is a service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non-political and non-sectarian organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are more than 45,000 clubs worldwide with more than 1.2 million Rotarians. These Rotarians represent various professions, businesses, and professional activities in their communities.
Rotary, and its ideals, came alive in Morehead City on May 11, 1925, when John M. Aberly, of the New Bern Rotary club, and special representative of Governor Char.ie J. Smith, District 37 Rotary International, Roanoke, Virginia, met with interested community leaders to present Rotary’s objectives and opportunities. On Charter Night, May 19, 1925, the Morehead City Rotary Club and Its 22 Charter members joined with 2,094 other Rotary Clubs in 30 countries and 53 Rotary Districts in actively furthering Rotary’s objectives.
Rotary Clubs in Carteret County, North Carolina, celebrated 100 years of Rotary in Carteret County on May 19, 2025. While celebrating and reflecting on 100 years of service above self for the citizens of Carteret County and other communities throughout the world, Rotarians will also consider ways to further Rotary’s ideals of service.
